Washington DC, August 12: For the first time in the US history, Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden has name Indian American Kamala Devi Harri as his vice-presidential running mate for the 2020 Presidential election. She will be the first Black and South Asian American woman to run on a major political party's presidential ticket.

“I have the great honour to announce that I’ve picked @KamalaHarris – a fearless fighter for the little guy, and one of the country’s finest public servants – like my running mate,” Biden tweeted Tuesday. She is only the fourth woman in history to be chosen for on a major party's presidential ticket. She often referred to as 'Female Barack Obama.'

After the announcement, Harris expresses her excitement on twitter saying, "I am honored to join him as our party's nominee for Vice President, and do what it takes to make him our Commander-in-Chief." This came after months of speculation and after his vetting team looked at more than a dozen women. Biden pledged earlier this year to choose a woman as his vice president and was under pressure to select a woman of color.

Kamala Harris is an Indian-American from her mom's side. Late Shyamala Gopalan, was who emigrated to America from India, was born in Madras (now Chennai). Harris graduated from Howard University in Washington, D.C., and the UC Hastings College of Law. She started her career as a deputy district attorney in Alameda County, California, and went on to become the District Attorney of San Francisco.

She was the first woman and the first person of color to be elected to both positions as district attorney in San Francisco and as attorney general of California. Harris served six years as attorney general of California before arriving in the Senate in 2016 and notably clashed with Biden during Democratic primary debates. Biden had earlier praised Harris as a leader on criminal justice and marriage equality and said she has “focused like a laser” on racial disparities that have resulted from the pandemic.

Moreover, this can be turned as a masterstroke of Biden amid social unrest over racial injustice and police brutality following the May 25 killing of George Floyd. Since then, the voters will be crucial in battleground states, such as Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin, where Trump narrowly prevailed in 2016, as well as Republican-leaning southern states like Georgia and Florida that polls show have become competitive this year.

Moreover, after the announcement President Trump wasted no time to rost her saying "She's a person that's told many, many stories that weren't true." He added, "She did very, very poorly in the primaries, as you know, she was expected to do well and she ended up right around 2%. So I was a little surprised that he picked her."

Trump also said Ms. Harris was "very, very nasty" and "horrible" to Mr. Biden during the Democratic primary debates. "She was very disrespectful to Joe Biden and it's hard to pick somebody that's that disrespectful," he said.
