Centre issues guidelines for reopening of yoga institutes, gyms from Aug 5

Mumbai, Aug 3: The Health Ministry on Monday issued guidelines on preventive measures to contain Spread of COVID-19 in Yoga Institutes & Gymnasiums after the Ministry of Home Affairs had allowed yoga institutes and gymnasiums to re-open from August 5.

The ministry had ordered all yoga institutes and gymnasiums in containment zones shall remain closed for the public. Only those outside containment zones will be allowed to open up. It has also stated that all yoga institutes and gymnasiums shall comply with all health-related guidelines/SOP/notification issued by the Union/State Government from time to time.
 
 
Meanwhile, persons above 65 years of age, persons with co-morbidities, pregnant women, and children below the age of 10 years are advised not to use gyms in closed spaces. The use of face covers/masks is mandatory at all times within the premises. However, during yoga exercise or exercising in gymnasiums, as far as possible only a visor may be used since the use of masks (in particular N-95 masks) during exercise may cause difficulty in breathing.
 
 
Further, the ministry added there will be frequent hand washing with soap (for at least 40-60 seconds) even when hands are not visibly dirty. It also asked to used alcohol-based hand sanitizers (for at least 20 seconds) can be practiced wherever feasible. The ministry also asked respiratory etiquettes to be strictly followed. This involves the strict practice of covering one’s mouth and nose while coughing/sneezing with a tissue/handkerchief/flexed elbow and disposing of used tissues properly. Self-monitoring of health by all and reporting any illness at the earliest to state and district helpline. Spitting should be strictly prohibited. Later, on, it stated, utilisation of outdoor space, if any, has been encouraged. The institutes have also been asked to create specific pathways for entry and exit points into the premises by using a floor or wall markings. The government has also asked the owners and managers of gyms and yoga centers to ensure that equipment and machines are placed at a distance of six feet. It also asked yoga institutes have been directed to plan fitness activities keeping the floor area of 4m2 per person.
 
It also ordered Spas, Sauna, Steam Bath and Swimming Pool (wherever applicable) shall remain closed. The use of outdoor space, if available, is encouraged while the institutes have been asked to create specific pathways for entry and exit of individuals.The guidelines aim to minimize all possible physical contacts between staff, members & visitors and maintain social distancing and other preventive and safety measures in the context of COVID-19.
