New Delhi, September 11: President Ram Nath Kovind appointed veteran actor and former BJP MP Paresh Rawal as the New Chairman of the National School of Drama, India’s most prestigious theatre institute. He will take over the position of chairman from prominent theatre artist Arjun Deo Charan who is chairing it at present.
National School of Drama (or NSD) is a theatre training institute situated in New Delhi, India which is one of the foremost theatre training institutions in the world and the only one of its kind in India. It was set up by the Sangeet Natak Akademi as one of its constituent units in 1959.
It is an autonomous organization under the Ministry of Culture, Government of India. The institute has given us many brilliant actors like Naseeruddin Shah, Om Puri, Anupam Kher, Irrfan Khan, Piyush Mishra, Neena Gupta to name just a few.
Expressing his happiness Rawal said, he is looking forward to sharing his knowledge and experience with future generations. He also added that it will be a great opportunity for me to share my knowledge&experience with the future gen. I am really looking forward to it. I am ready to take responsibility&face the challenges along with it. It is a happy day for me& I want to look forward to my new role. Thank you," he said.
Moreover, information and broadcasting minister Prakash Javdekar also praise Paresh Rawal saying, " A versatile actor and a theatre person like Paresh Rawal will take NSD to next level ."
Paresh Rawal began his career in the eighties with theatre. Rawal was honored with a Padma Shri in 2014, for his contribution to the entertainment industry. He also won the National Film Award in 1994 as Best Supporting Actor for "Woh Chokri" and "Sir". He is also widely known for his outstanding performance in the biopic Sardar (1993), where he essayed the titular role of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.
Rawal has been part of all kinds of genres. He is particularly loved for his comic roles in commercial entertainers including Andaz Apna Apna (1994), Chachi 420 (1997), Hera Pheri (2000), Aankhen (2002), Awara Paagal Deewana (2002), Hungama (2003), Hulchul (2004), Garam Masala (2005), Phir Hera Pheri (2006), Bhagam Bhag (2006), Malamaal Weekly (2006), Welcome (2007), and Atithi Tum Kab Jaoge? (2010).
He was last seen in Uri – The Surgical Strike. He will be next seen in Coolie No. 1.
