This comes in light after the Gangadhara Nellore police station received a call about the incident on Sunday morning. Chittoor SP Senthil Kumar informed that the Gangadhara Nellore police station received information in the wee hours of Sunday morning that some miscreants had damaged the Nandi idol in Lord Shiva Temple.

"The police immediately rushed to the spot and started probing the matter. The Nandi idol was found broken into pieces nearby its pedestal. The police inquired from the local people about the incident,” he said.

The incident comes amid a series of attacks on temples in the state. This was the fifth instance of Anti-Hindu vandalism in a month. Earlier, on Friday an idol of Lord Hanuman was found damaged near Pattikonda town in Kurnool district. On 16 September, three silver lion statues at Kanaka Durga temple in Vijayawada were stolen.

The century-old wooden chariot of the Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy temple at Antarvedi area in Sakhinetipalli Mandal in East Godavari district was burnt to ashes at night. A CBI probe had been ordered in the case.

In the last few months, a number of such incidents have taken place. No action has been taken so far against the miscreants. Earlier the 12th century Kasi Visweswara Swamy temple was attacked a few days back in which some miscreants barged in the temple and damaged the Nandi idol. The same month, idols of the deities at the Sri Venu Gopala Swamy temple were destroyed in Rompicharla village in Guntur District. The idol of Sri Ganesha was reportedly stolen.
