NIA Special Court Sentences ISIS Terrorist to Life Imprisonment

Kochi, September 29: In a major development, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) Special Court, Ernakulam, has sentenced ISIS Terrorist Subahani Haja Moideen, to life imprisonment for hatching a criminal conspiracy to wage war against the Governments of India and Iraq. He has also been imposed with a fine of Rs. 2,10,000 for this role.

 

 

 

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) had earlier issued a Press Release informing of Moideen's conviction on September 25. The court on Friday had found Moideen guilty of the charges and said the punishment would be delivered on Monday.

 

Among the charges that the court found against, Moideen includes criminal conspiracy, besides Sections in the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) also. He was found guilty under Section 125 of the Indian Penal Code for waging war against a friendly country and Section 120 B (criminal conspiracy) and Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA).

 

 

Moideen, who hails from the Idukki district of Kerala, was arrested by the NIA in 2016 following a crackdown in Tamil Nadu with the help of central security agencies and other state police. NIA had arrested him for supporting terror activities of the terror outfit Islamic State. He had allegedly joined the terror organisation in the year 2015 and was trained in Iraq and Syria. He was a part of waging war against the Government of Iraq.

 

Moreover, NIA had found that Subahani had planned to spread IS activities in Kerala and Tamil Nadu and to assassinate prominent people. They found that he had recruited 15 people for IS through social media for carrying out terror activities in the country. For these, he was charged under Section 120-B of the Indian Penal Code, and provisions of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA).

 

According to the probe agency, Moideen had joined the Islamic State in 2015 and had received training in Iraq and Syria. He also took part in waging war against the Iraqi government. The agency also suspected that Moideen may have had detailed knowledge about the 2015 terror attacks in Paris that left 130 people dead and hundreds injured. Subhani Haja Moideen was also associated with Pakistani national Mohammed Usman Ghani while being in the Islamic State.

 

Earlier on Wednesday, a French investigation team had arrived in Kerala and had visited Viyyur prison in Thrissur city to interrogate Moideen in connection with the 2015 terror attacks in Paris
