Washington DC, January 11: After unprecedented violent unrest in the US Capitol, the House Democrats are planning to stage a vote to impeach outgoing Republican US President Donald Trump, for his role in the Capitol attack.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi gave this information saying the preferred response to the attack on the US Capitol is for Vice President Mike Pence to remove Trump by invoking the 25th Amendment. The move to impeach Trump gained momentum on Sunday.

Writing the letter to fellow Democrats, the speakers vowed to bring a vote on impeachment in the absence of action by Pence, setting the stage for a historic first: the impeachment of a president for the second time in his tenure. She called on the president to resign or face impeachment proceedings again.

Describing Trump’s actions as a “horrific assault on our democracy” Pelosi said in her letter, "In protecting our Constitution and our Democracy, we will act with urgency because this President represents an imminent threat to both... As the days go by, the horror of the ongoing assault on our democracy perpetrated by this President is intensified and so is the immediate need for action."

“If we do not receive Unanimous Consent, this [Raskin] legislation is planned to be brought up on the Floor the following day. We are calling on the Vice President to respond within 24 hours,” Pelosi wrote.

“Next, we will proceed with bringing impeachment legislation to the Floor,” she added.

This comes after supporters of Trump stormed the building to protest the Electoral College vote, forcing a lockdown and confrontations with the police. While speaking at the White House Trump encouraged thousands of his supporters to march to the Capitol to block Congress from certifying Biden the victor in November’s election. After which rioters breached the Capitol, ransacked offices, smashed windows, defaced historic artifacts, and tracked their feces through the country’s best-known emblem of democracy.

As per the reports, a group of Democrats, led by Reps. David Cicilline (D-R.I.), Jamie Raskin (D-Md.), and Ted Lieu (D-Calif.) have drafted a formal impeachment resolution titled "Incitement of Insurrection", which they plan to introduce on Monday. The measure would impeach Trump for high crimes and misdemeanors “by willfully inciting violence against the government of the United States.”

If passed, it would make Trump the first president in the nation’s history to be impeached twice. Democrats hold a majority in the U.S Congress. The Senate would then hold a trial and vote on his removal from office, with a two-thirds majority required for conviction.

Trump was last year impeached by the House over allegations he pressured the president of Ukraine to help uncover alleged corrupt dealings of Joe Biden. But acquitted by the Republican-controlled Senate.
