New Delhi, Jan 11: The World Health Organization (WHO) recently released a new map, that differentiated the Indian Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh from the rest of Indian mainland with a different color. The new WHO map of India has marked the newly created Union Territories of India, Ladakh and Jammu and Kashmir in grey color. The map also displays the Aksai Chin region in a different shade.

The map has marked the disputed Aksai Chin region in grey color with blue stripes. The blue stripes are in identical shade as that of China whereas the map shows India in navy blue color. India is not pleased with the new map and has opposed it. India believes that China has a big role in the new map of WHO. The influence of China on the World Health Organization is high as the country provides huge funding to the organization.

WHO's recent map islating Indian UTs of J&K and Ladakh from their Indian identity

India recently had tussled with Nepal and Pakistan regarding discrepancies depicted in maps. In May 2020, Nepal released a new political map that claimed regions of Kalapani, Lipulekh and Limpiyadhura. Nepal released the map after India inaugurated a motor-able link road connecting India and China. The road passes through Lipulekh pass.
This region is claimed by Nepal as its own territory.

In August 2019, Pakistan released a map that showed the geographical areas of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh within its area. Also, the Junagadh region of Gujarat was shown as its own territory. The map was released a day before completion of a year of Indian Government rolling back the special status of Jammu and Kashmir. Also, it was a counter action for India’s inclusion of Pakistan occupied Kashmir as part of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir.

WHO map published in April 2020

Initially, around April 2020, WHO had issued a map that too made injustice regarding the nationalities of people from Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh with the map which also drew controversies. In the April 2020 map of WHO, parts of Ladakh (Aksai-Chin) were shown as part of Chinese territory with a dotted line and color code. Also, Jammu & Kashmir and the rest of India were depicted in different colors. The region of Pakistan occupied Kashmir was marked with a dotted line, suggesting it as a 'disputed territory'.

Many UN maps show parts of Kashmir as 'disputed', but April 2020 was probably the first time when J&K and Ladakh were shown in different colors than the rest of India in the map of a UN body. India, at that time, had formally raised the matter with concerned UN authorities, at that time. However, things doesn't seem to have made the expected impact since WHO, indirectly backed by China continue to execute the 'Chinese agenda' through such acts.
