Bose was born on this day in 1897. The government has decided to observe January 23 as 'Parakram Diwas' to commemorate his birth anniversary. “The entire country is celebrating the 125th birth anniversary of Netaji Subash Chandra Bose, today. The country has decided to celebrate this day as ‘Prakram Diwas’. His life gives us inspiration even today,” he said.

He said the fast-paced development of Assam in very important to us, adding, "The way to 'Atmanirbhar Assam' is through 'Atmavishwaas' (self-confidence) among the people here. 40 per cent of the state's population is taking benefit of 'Ayushmaan Bharat' scheme of the Central government."

This is his first visit to the state in the run-up to the Assembly elections likely in April. The venue for Modi’s programme is the historic Jerenga Pothar in Upper Assam’s Sivasagar district. Union Home Minister Amit Shah is scheduled to visit the state on Sunday. "Today, the government of Assam has removed the major concern of your life. With more than 1 lakh native families getting the right to own land, the major concern of your life has now gone away," he said in a tweet in Hindi.

Later in the day, PM Modi is scheduled to visit West Bengal to address “Parakram Diwas” celebrations in Kolkata on Netaji Subash Chandra Bose’s birth anniversary. Modi will interact with artists and delegates at 3:30 pm at the National Library in Kolkata. He will then attend the Parakram Diwas programme at Victoria Memorial Hall at 4:30 pm.

Meanwhile on Friday, the All Assam Students Union (AASU) took out torchlight processions pressing for their demands, including scrapping of the Citizenship Amendment Act, days before Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah set foot in the state. AASU will stage protests in all district and sub-divisional headquarters by covering their faces with black cloth during Modi's visit on Saturday, and observe 'Black Day' on January 24 by burning copies of the CAA during the home minister's visit.
