WHO chief thanks PM Modi for ‘Continued Support’ to global COVID-19 response

New Delhi, January 23: In a major development, World Health Organisation (WHO) chief Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus on Saturday praised India and has thanked PM Modi for "continued support" in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.
 
Taking to Twitter, Dr. Tedros said acting together, including sharing of knowledge, will help in combating coronavirus.

"Thank you #India and Prime Minister @narendramodi for your continued support to the global #COVID19 response. Only if we #ACTogether, including sharing of knowledge, can we stop this virus and save lives and livelihoods," WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus tweeted.
  
 
 
 
India has been sending vaccines to countries in the South Asian neighborhood and others like Brazil and Morocco. So far, the nation has supplied millions of doses of 'Made in India' vaccine-- 'Covishield' to Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan, and the Maldives under grant assistance in sync with its "Neighbourhood First policy.
 
Apart from WHO, US State Department had also lauded India's efforts in distributing the shots. "We applaud India’s role in global health, sharing millions of doses of COVID-19 vaccine in South Asia. India's free shipments of the vaccine began w/Maldives, Bhutan, Bangladesh, and Nepal and will extend to others. India's a true friend using its pharma to help the global community," it said in a tweet.
 
Many countries have also come forward to thank India and PM Modi for joining efforts against the global health crisis. Earlier on Saturday, Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro thanked PM Modi for helping the country, in what he called, “a global obstacle”. India had sent two million doses of Covishield, a vaccine developed by AstraZeneca and Oxford University and manufactured by the Serum Institute of India.
