'प्लस्टिक लाओ, फ्री खाना खाओ', Garbage Cafe in Delhi allows foodies to enjoy 'free food' in exchange of plastic waste

New Delhi, January 25: Hungry? You should have been in Delhi and should've had a lot of plastic waste. Wondering why we say this? Well, catering to the Swacchh Bharat Mission in India, the capital city, in its unique instance has started a 'Garbage Cafe' where people are to get free meals in exchange for plastic waste.

The Najafgarh Zone of South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC), while noting the point said that this initiative is in bid to keep the city plastic free and provide free meals to the needy and rag pickers. “We can keep our surroundings clean and plastic free with the initiative by offering delicious food in exchange for plastic waste. This innovative step will contribute towards recycling of dry waste and also bring behavioral change in society towards promoting reduce, reuse and recycling of plastic waste. This scheme will be implemented in other wards of Najafgarh Zone,” it added.
 
Earlier in year 2019, SDMC had started a similar cafe in a mall at Dwarka where people would get snacks in exchange of 250 gms of plastic waste and full meal in exchange of 1 kg of plastic waste. Visitors then could also avail discounts in return for plastic waste at other food outlets in the mall.

There are posters all around the places to inform the maximum number of people about the initiative and so that people don't throw away plastic as waste but can collect it to exchange for food. India's first 'garbage cafe' was opened in Chhattisgarh by Ambikapur Municipal Corporation. The initiative was as similar to this one, aimed at making the city plastic-free.
