New Delhi, October 15: On the occasion of the 90th birth anniversary of the Bharat Ratna and former President of India, Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, ‘Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Prerana Sthal’ was inaugurated at the Naval Science & Technological Laboratory (NSTL), at Visakhapatnam on October 15, 2021. The inauguration was also to commemorate the ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’.

The NSTL is the very first naval research laboratory of the Defence Research & Development Organisation or DRDO. A statue of Dr. Kalam was also unveiled by Dr. Samir V Kamat, Director General (Naval Systems & Materials) at DRDO.

On the occasion, NSTL products Varunastra, Torpedo Advanced Light (TAL) which is a light-weight anti-submarine weapon, electrically propelled and can be launched from ships / helicopters, and Maareech decoy – which autonomously identifies incoming threats, are being displayed at the venue.

As a part of the ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’, the DRDO is taking several initiatives towards highlighting the importance of R&D and increasing awareness amongst general public and igniting young minds in particular. Dr. Kalam’s Prerana Sthal is to motivate the people - particularly the minds from Dr. Kalam’s life and those of his impeccable achievements.

Outstanding Scientists PVS Ganesh Kumar, BVSS Krishna Kumar, Dr. A Srinivas Kumar, other senior Scientists, officers, Members of the NSTL Civil Employees Union and Works Committee and staff of NSTL, teachers and students of the Ramanath Secondary School participated in this event.
