Chennai Rains: Govt declares holiday for schools, colleges & offices; PM Modi dials CM Stalin

Chennai, November 08: As the heavy rains continue to lash over Chennai and its nearby areas, Chief Minister MK Stalin declared a two-day holiday for schools and colleges in Chennai and besides other rain-affected districts of Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, and Chengalpet.

Chief Minister MK Stalin inspected several inundated areas here along with top officials including Chief Secretary V Irai Anbu and directed authorities to take swift action to drain floodwater. Moreover, Stalin has appealed to private firms to announce a holiday or allow employees to work from home.
 
 
Heavy rains have forced officials to rescue and move over 500 people to temporary shelters. A flood alert has also been issued in the Kancheepuram and Chengalpattu districts on the banks of the River Adyar. According to the data provided by the India Meteorological Department, in the last 24 hours, Chennai received 210mm of rain - the highest in a single day since 2015.
 

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday spoke to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin and discussed the situation in view of heavy rainfall in parts of the state. PM Modi assured all the possible support from the central government's side in the rescue and relief work.
 
 
Meanwhile, the meteorological department said a cyclonic circulation lay over north coastal Tamil Nadu, southeast of the Bay of Bengal, and a low-pressure area is likely to form by November 9 and the agency has forecast widespread rainfall for at least the next three days in the state.
 
According to a bulletin issued in the wee hours of Monday, the IMD said, "A cyclonic circulation lies over Southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining equatorial Indian Ocean extending up to 4.5 KM above mean sea level at 3 UTC of November 7."
 
 
"Under its influence, a low-pressure area is likely to form over the Southeast Bay of Bengal and its neighborhood around November 9, 2021. It is likely to become more marked and move towards the north Tamil Nadu coast during the next 48 hours, " the IMD said." The IMD has warned fishermen against venturing into the east-central and adjoining the west-central Arabian Sea till early Tuesday.
 
Following the situation, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has deployed four teams in Tamil Nadu. One team each has been deployed in Thiruvallur and Chengalpattu districts and two teams in Madurai district. A 24X7 control room has been set up in Arakkonam to closely monitor the Tamil Nadu rain's live updates.
