The announcement was made by UNESCO on its website on Monday. The summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, was among 49 cities worldwide to join the UNESCO creative cities network. The network now consists of 295 cities from 90 countries across the globe. The cities were picked in recognition of "their commitment to placing culture and creativity at the heart of their development and to sharing knowledge and good practices," according to a press release posted on Unesco.

The UCCN was created in 2004 to promote cooperation with and among cities that have identified creativity as a strategic factor for sustainable urban development.

Expressing his happiness, Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the people of J&K for the recognition of the vibrant cultural ethos of Srinagar.

Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha termed it as the ultimate recognition for artisans and weavers of Jammu and Kashmir.

It should be noted that Indian National Commission for Cooperation with UNESCO had recommended Gwalior and Srinagar for inclusion in the coveted list, but only J&K's summer capital made it. Meanwhile, Hyderabad and Mumbai are already in the network, having been added in October 2019.
