Impressive! Assam records 45.24 percent voter turnout as of 2 pm

New Delhi, Mar 27: Assam had recorded 45.24% voter turnout till 2 PM, according to the Election Commission of India. Voting for the first phase of Assam Assembly Elections 2021 began on Saturday with voters in 47 out of the state's 126 constituencies exercising their franchise today.

The first phase of polling for assembly elections in the states of West Bengal and Assam began at 7 am on Saturday and is currently underway.

Besides, the Kailabor constituency in the state has witnessed the highest voting percentage till now, while the Gohpur constituency witnessed the lowest voting percentage.

Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal cast his vote at a polling centre in Dibrugarh in the first phase 1 elections and stated that his party “will get more than 100 seats.”
 
Tight security arrangements have been put in place across 12 districts in Assam as the state goes to polls. The polling will continue till 6 pm.

The first phase will decide the fate of 264 candidates, including Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, state Congress chief Ripun Bora and 23 women candidates. 42 seats from 11 districts of Upper Assam and northern Assam region and five seats from central Assam's Nagaon district. Polling for the next two phases will be held on April 1 and April 6. The counting of votes will take place on May 2.
