Party founder Captain Vijayakant said the decision was taken after several rounds of talks, during which the two parties were unable to agree with seats. According to the reports, Vijayakanth's wife Premalatha Vijayakanth, who is the party treasurer, and his son Vijay Prabhakar are also likely to contest the Assembly elections.

The DMDK had performed exceedingly well in the 2011 Assembly elections in alliance with the AIADMK. DMDK had won 29 seats and was working as the main opposition party in Tamil Nadu.

The Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam is an Indian regional political party in the state of Tamil Nadu. DMDK is a Dravidian party founded by Vijayakanth at Madurai on 14 September 2005.

AIAMDK and BJP had announced their seat-sharing pact last week. The assembly elections for 234 assembly seats in Tamil Nadu will be conducted in one phase on April 6. The counting of votes is slated for May 2. This is the first state election for the ruling AIADMK since the death of its charismatic and powerful leader J Jayalalithaa.
