UK home secretary Preeti Patel signed off the papers of the extradition after, UK court-ordered extradition of Nirav Modi, in February. The UK’s Westminster Magistrates’ Court had also acknowledged that the diamantaire had conspired to destroy evidence and intimidate witnesses and ordered that Nirav Modi may be extradited to India to stand trial.

What next?

With that Nirav has now only 14 days to apply for permission to appeal against the Home Secretary's order in the high court in London. If his appeal is accepted, then UK HC will hear his arguments and decide on the case. This process may take six months to one year. During this period, if the courts decision comes in India's Faour then Nirav can go to the SC only if HC allows him to do so.

What was the scam?

Nirav is one of the wanted fugitives in India. The fugitive billionaire is wanted for fraud and money laundering in the Rs 14,000-crore Punjab National Bank (PNB) scam. In January 2018, Nirav and his uncle Mehul Choksi left the country and fled to another country after cheating the Punjab National Bank. Following the fraud on 27 July, India applies for Nirav's Extradition in the money laundering case. After that, UK police arrest Modi on March 19. He was lodged in Wandsworth prison on the outskirts of London.

Nirav Modi is accused in two criminal cases. First is the USD 2 billion PNB scam slapped on the diamantaire by the CBI. Second, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) case relating to the laundering of the proceeds of that bank fraud.

It should be noted that Nirav Modi executed the Fraud during the UPA govt. Still knowing that fact some so-called 'Intellectuals' and 'Andolan Givi' blame the NDA government to propagate their agenda and misleading the public. Some of these intellectuals especially Congress leader and former High Court Judge Abhay Thipasy deposed in the favor of Nirav Modi at the UK Court.

Not only Tipasy but former Supreme Court judge Justice Markandey Katju who had deposed before the UK court as an expert witness on Nirav Modi’s behalf. He also tried to stop his extradition saying that Nirav Modi would not get a free and fair trial in India. Even being the former SC judge he had said that the judiciary in India was highly politicized and corrupt.

It was so shocking that someone who served the Indian Judiciary at such a high level was appointed to guard and protect the rule of law passed a comment like that. However, the UK court made some very scathing remarks criticizing their biased opinions and rejected their contentions. And this extradition tight slap to the liberals.
