President appoints Justice N.V. Ramana as 48th Chief Justice of India

New Delhi, April 06: After Chief Justice of India SA Bobde recommended Justice NV Ramana as his successor, President Ram Nath Kovid appointed Justice NV Ramana as the 48th Chief Justice of India. He will take oath on April 24.

It should be noted that, Justice Bobde was sworn in as the 47th Chief Justice of India in November 2019, succeeding Justice (retired) Ranjan Gogoi. CJI Bobde's tenure will end on 23 April 2021.

Ministry of Law and order issues the notification in the morning. In the notification signed by Barun Mitra, Secretary to the Government of India noted, “In exercise of the powers conferred by clause (2) of Article 124 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Shri Nuthalapati Venkata Ramana, Judge of the Supreme Court, to be the Chief Justice of India with effect from 24th April 2021."

Justice NV Ramana
 
Justice NV Ramana is the most senior judge in the Supreme Court after CJI Bobde. Born on August 27, 1957, Justice Ramana has tenure till August 26, 2022. He enrolled as an Advocate on February 10, 1983. He has practiced in the High Court of Andhra Pradesh, Central and Andhra Pradesh Administrative Tribunals, and the Supreme Court of India in Civil, Criminal, Constitutional, Labour, Service, and Election matters. He has specialized in Constitutional, Criminal, Service, and Inter-State River laws. He has also functioned as Panel Counsel for various Government Organizations.
 
 
Justice Ramana enrolled as an Advocate in February 1983 at the Andhra Pradesh High Court. He worked as a Panel Counsel for various Government Organizations. He has also served as an Additional Standing Counsel for Central Government and Standing Counsel for Railways in the Central Administrative Tribunal at Hyderabad. He further functioned as an Additional Advocate General of Andhra Pradesh. He was appointed as a Permanent Judge of the Andhra Pradesh High Court on June 27, 2000.
 
He also functioned as the Acting Chief Justice of Andhra Pradesh High Court from March 10, 2013, to May 20, 2013. He has been credited for authoring path-breaking judgments in tax, constitution, arbitration, and criminal law. He served as Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court before being elevated to the Supreme Court in February 2014. . He had participated in several National and International Conferences held in India and abroad and submitted papers on various topics of legal importance.
