As per Article 81 of the Russian Constitution, the same person cannot hold the office of President for more than two terms in a row. Vladimir Putin was elected as president in 2012 and again re-elected as president in 2018. He will now stay in power till 2024. The term of a president in Russia is six years. However the new constitution has not changed the two-term limit, it has removed the words “in a row” With this, Putin will be able to run for presidential elections for another two terms under the new constitution.

The law, signed by Putin, limits any future president to two terms in office but resets his tenure. It also prevents anyone who has held foreign citizenship from running for the Kremlin. Apart from it the amendment also gives the president additional power to fire Judges in the country's higher court and to reject laws passed by the parliament.

Putin had proposed the change last year as part of constitutional reforms that Russians overwhelmingly backed in a vote in July.

Those changes were backed in a public vote last summer and could allow Putin, 68, to potentially remain in power until the age of 83. He is currently serving his second consecutive term as president and his fourth in total. The legislation was passed in the lower and upper houses of parliament last month.
