Lucknow, May 31: When the power of love overcomes the love of power, the world will know peace, they say. With every passing day, it is becoming impossible to ignore the reality surrounding 'Love Jihad'. What we can perhaps dispense with is the pejorative nature of the term, but the phrase has caught on so well with the media that it is equally impossible to ignore its usage.

Uttar Pradesh Police on Monday has arrested a man under ‘love jihad’ law in Lucknow for marrying a woman and converting her to Islam. The victim lodged a complaint stating that a man named Abid befriended her impersonating as Aditya Singh and converted her to Islam and married her by threatening her.

Giving out more information on the incident, Ghazipur ACP, Sunil Kumar Sharma said, “A woman lodged a complaint stating that a man named Abid befriended her impersonating as Aditya Singh. Later, he got the woman converted to Islam and married her by threatening to leak their intimate videos online. Later, she came to know that Abid was already married and had 7 children. He again married a Hindu woman by Hindu rituals in February this year. An FIR has been lodged against him under IPC and Prohibition of Unlawful Religious Conversion Act.”

The Love Jihad law in UP is to provide for the prohibition of unlawful conversion from one religion to another by "misrepresentation, force, undue influence, coercion, allurement or by any fraudulent means or by marriage and for the matters connected therewith or incidental thereto". If someone goes against the law, the person would face jail term of one to 5 years, and a minimum fine of Rs 15,000.

In case, such conversion is of a minor, a woman from the Scheduled Caste or Scheduled Tribe, then those found guilty would have to face a jail term from three to 10 years, with a minimum fine of Rs 25,000. On the other hand, if such conversion is found at the mass level, then those guilty would face a jail term from three to 10 years, with a minimum fine of Rs 50,000.
