Karnataka announces financial assistance for BPL families that lost earning member to COVID

Bengaluru, June 15: In a bid to help families who have lost earning members due to COVID-19. Karnataka Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa has announced an ex-gratia of Rs 1 lakh for all the families under the Below Poverty Line (BPL).

Yediyurappa took Twitter and announced the news saying, "Due to the pandemic, many families in the state are in trouble. Keeping this in mind, we have decided to give Rs 1 lakh to each BPL family, which lost their adult members."

 
As an extension of the economic relief package announced in two parts so far by the Karnataka government, Rs 1 lakh will be given as compensation to BPL card holding families who have lost an adult earning member to COVID-19. The scheme will, however, be limited to one person per family.
 
 
 
 
Yediyurappa further said that the decision will benefit about 25,000 to 30,000 such families incurring an expenditure of Rs 250 crore to Rs 300 crore to the state exchequer. According to the Union Health Ministry, Karnataka has 1,80,856 active cases of COVID-19.
 
 
Earlier, the Karnataka govt also announced the 'Chief Minister's Bala Seva Scheme' for the welfare of children orphaned due to Covid -19, including monthly financial assistance of Rs 3,500 for guardians of such children. According to this scheme, children below 10 years not having guardians will be put under child care institutions, and for the overall development of the child, mentorship will also be provided.
