New Delhi, June 22: Suppressing all its previous landmark, India achieved record-breaking vaccination figures on Monday as it administered over 8.6 million COVID-19 vaccine doses in a single day, the highest single-day coverage till now.
As per the data available on the government's Cowin website, a total of 85,96,807 vaccine shots were administered on Monday. With that, India's cumulative COVID-19 vaccination coverage exceeded the 28-crores mark.
This is a new record for the highest Covid vaccines administered in a single day. The previous high was of over 48 lakh doses on April 1. The number is expected to rise further.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi said applauded front-line warriors for the landmark achievement in India’s fight against COVID-19. He said the vaccine remains our strongest weapon to fight COVID-19. He praised the citizens who took the vaccine and also the healthcare workers who worked hard to ensure that a significant population was immunized against the deadly virus.
"The vaccine remains our strongest weapon to fight COVID-19. Congratulations to those who got vaccinated and kudos to all the front-line warriors working hard to ensure so many citizens got the vaccine. Well done India!" PM Modi wrote on Twitter.
Meanwhile, Health Minister Dr. Vardhan said that this major feat has been achieved on the first day of the largest free vaccination campaign in the world which is kick-started in the country today.
Under the drive, the Centre would procure 75 percent of vaccines and give them to states for free distribution to all citizens above the age of 18. It will also handle the 25 percent vaccination that was with states till now under the liberalised plan announced earlier.
