New Delhi, June 28:At a time when Twitter is already facing lots of heat over the new IT law, now Twitter interim resident grievance officer for India Dharmendra Chatur has stepped down from his post within a few weeks after being appointed to that position.
This development has come after the
government slammed Chatur for temporarily blocking the Law ministers Ravi Shankar Prasad's account for allegedly violating the USA’s Copyright Act. Apart from this
UP police have also sent the notice to the Chatur and Twitter managing director Maheshwari in the loni case.
Twitter has no longer displaying his name on their respective website. Chatur has also deleted his account on the microblogging platform. Twitter had erlier appointed Chatur as interim resident grievance officer for India after receiving a final notice from the central government on June 5.
On the other hand, Twitter has now appointed Jeremy Kessel as their interim grievance officer as per the requirement of the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules 2021. Kessel, who has been with Twitter for several years.
He is based out of California, which is not seen to be in line with New IT rules, as according to the news IT rule the Grievance officer has to be in India. The new IT rule which came into force on 25 May, mandates social media companies to establish a grievance redressal mechanism for resolving complaints from the users or victims.
This appointment can put Twitter in more trouble. It should be noted that last week, the Indian government has withdrawn,
Twitter's intermediary status for not complying with the new Information Technology Rules. With that, social media now will be legally held responsible for all content posted by its users on the platform.
