New Delhi, June 03: The Delhi Police on Tuesday clarified of arresting a 48 year old cleric for allegedly raping a 12 year old girl inside a mosque in northeast Delhi. The cleric, who hails from Bharatpur in Rajasthan, was arrested from the Loni district in Ghaziabad on Monday morning.

"The accused was booked under section 376 of the Indian Penal Code and relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act," police said. "The cleric was also produced before a city court which sent him to 14-day judicial custody. The accused lived in Ghaziabad's Loni, is married and has four children", police said.
 
 
The incident took place on Sunday evening when the 12 year old girl had gone to the mosque to fetch water, police were quoted as saying. The girl narrated her ordeal to her parents after she returned home. A case was registered as the girl's parents filed a complaint with the police on Sunday night. They accused the cleric of sexual assault.
 
 
 
In their complaint, the girl's parents alleged that their daughter had gone to the mosque to fetch water when she was allegedly raped by the cleric. Following the incident, the girl was counselled and taken for a medical examination, police said. Police personnel were deployed outside the mosque as agitated locals gathered there to protest, police said.
