PM Modi review preparations for the Olympics, directs officials to vaccinate athletes 'on top priority'

New Delhi, June 04: As only 50 days have left for the Tokyo Olympic game, Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a review meeting over the preparation of athletes for the upcoming Tokyo Olympics. In the meeting, PM Modi asked officials to ensure that every athlete and support staff traveling for the games is vaccinated as soon as possible.
 
During the meeting, he checked the situation of the participating players and their efforts. PM also apprised about the various steps taken towards ensuring uninterrupted training for athletes amidst the pandemic, participation in international competitions to win Olympic quota, vaccination of athletes, and customized support being provided to them.

Besides, PM Modi said that sports are at the heart of our national character and our youth are creating a strong and vibrant culture of sports. PM added that for every young sportsperson shining on the global stage, a thousand more will be inspired to take up sports. PM has appealed to all to cheer for the athletes adding that the wishes of 135 crore Indians will be with our youngsters who are participating in the Olympics.
 
 
 
 
PM said that he will talk to the contingent traveling to the Olympics in July to encourage them and wish them luck for the Summer Games.
 
According to the sports officials, a total of 100 athletes have qualified for Tokyo Olympics across 11 sports disciplines and about 25 more athletes are likely to qualify. While a total of 19 Indian athletes had participated at the last Paralympics in 2016 at Rio de Janeiro. 26 para-athletes have qualified&16 more athletes are likely to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics.
 
 
Tokyo Olympics was postponed by a year due to a raging coronavirus pandemic. However, despite COVID fears still at large, Tokyo 2020 chief Seiko Hashimoto, on Thursday, said that the Games cannot be postponed again.
