India elected to United Nations Economic and Social Council for 2022-24 term

New Delhi, June 08: India has been elected to the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) in the Asia-Pacific States Category, for the three years term. The term will start from January 2022. ECOSOC is one of the six main organs of the United Nations. President of the General Assembly Volkan Bozkir announced the results on Tuesday.
 
ECOSOC is a 54-member Economic and Social Council, and it was established in 1954 by a United Nations charter. It brings together people and issues to promote collective action for a sustainable world. It helps in advancing the economic, social, and environmental dimensions of sustainable development.

Soon after the announcement, the Indian Ambassador to United Nations TS Tirumurti on Tuesday thanked members for showing confidence in India and casting their vote. T S Tirumurti shared his gratitude to the UN members on his Twitter handle.
 
Apart from India Kazakhstan, Afghanistan, and Oman were also elected in the Asia-Pacific States Category. Meanwhile, Eswatini, Cote d’ Ivoire, Mauritius, the United Republic of Tanzania, and Tunisia were elected from the African state. Among eastern European states, Croatia and the Czech Republic were elected. Belize, Peru, and Chile are among elected Latin American and Caribbean states.
 
 
 
According to the ECOSOC, seats on the Council are allotted based on geographical representation with 14 allocated to African states, 11 to Asian states, six to Eastern European states, 10 to Latin American and Caribbean states, and 13 to western European and other states.
 
 
India has been currently serving the 201-22 term as the non-permanent member of the powerful United Nations Security Council and will assume the presidency of the 15 nation council in August 2021.
 
Earlier in April India was elected in three UN ECOSOC bodies including the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice, the Executive Board of UN woman, and the Executive Board of the World Food Programme.
