NIV Pune detects new COVID variant; Covaxin shows efficacy against it

Pune, June 08: Pune-based National Institute of Virology has now detected another new variant of the Coronavirus -B.1.128.2- from international travelers from the UK and Brazil. NIV has told that the variant was isolated from nasal and throat swabs from international travelers.

According to the information given by NIV, the symptoms of the new variant may include weight loss, viral replication in the respiratory tract, and lung liaisons. More importantly, the B.1.128.2 also caused severe lung pathology in the infected Syrian Hamster model.

Experts have suggested that the new variant is similar to the Delta variant and could be more dangerous than the Alpha variant.
 
Covaxin is effective against the variant
 
According to the study conducted by NIV has found that Made-In-India Covid-19 vaccine Covaxin significantly boosts antibodies and neutralizing efficacy against the variant.
 
The Indian government had set up 10 national labs to look into mutants. The government has now added q0 more labs to this and they have taken 30,000 samples for study. Earlier, scientists in South Africa have detected potentially dangerous coronavirus mutations in a woman with advanced HIV.
