Yogi govt plants over 1 billion saplings in UP since 2017; to plant 30 cr saplings this year

Lucknow, July 5: Over one billion saplings have been planted in Uttar Pradesh during the regime of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath from 2017-18 to 2020-21.

"Over 1 billion saplings planted in the regime of Yogi Adityanath during 2017-18 to 2020-21. 'Massive Greening Drive' in the State of Uttar Pradesh with the objective of climate change mitigation, clean air and carbon sequestration is amongst the top priorities of the Chief Minister", read an official release.
 
 
The year wise detail of plantations done by the government is as follows - in 2017-2018, the government planted 5.71 crore saplings while in 2018-2019 the saplings planted were 11.77 crores. In 2019-2020, the number of saplings planted was 22.59 crore and 25.97 crore in the following year. This year, the target plantation is 30 crore which adds up to 95.94 crore.

It should be noted that over and above the departmental plantations, the citizens and farmers have also contributed to this drive and have planted over five crore saplings in the last five years raising the tally of plantation of over one billion samplings.
 
Meanwhile, the Uttar Pradesh government is celebrating Van Mahotsav (afforestation festival) from July 1 to 7. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has directed the authorities to ensure that the plantation drive is conducted successfully.

According to the State Forest Report 2019 of Forest Survey of India, there has been an increase of 127 km in the forest cover in UP as compared to 2017. According to the report, the tree cover of Uttar Pradesh is 3.05 percent as compared to the national average of 2.89 percent.
