In the biggest-ever expansion of the Council of Ministers since he took charge for the first time in 2014, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inducted more than 40 new faces. Along with that 12 sitting ministers, including Ravi Shankar Prasad, Ramesh Pokhariyal, Harsh Vardhan resigned from the Cabinet.

From health, education to labor, civil aviation, IT, and petroleum were given to new and young leaders, all under 55 years. PM Modi has brought in Sarbananda Sonowal, Narayan Rane, and Jyotiraditya Scindia as Cabinet ministers. PM Modi has also brought in young faces and has also given representation to various social groups and regions in the reshuffle. The youngest minister sworn-in is Nisith Pramanik who is 35 years of age.

Among newly-inducted faces is former IAS officer Ashwini Vaishnaw, who will take over as the new Union Minister for Communications, Electronics and Information Technology, and Railways. A IIT-Kanpur graduate, Vaishnaw worked in the PMO during A B Vajpayee’s tenure.
 
 
Seven ministers of states have been promoted and have been given Cabinet rank. These include Anurag Thakur, Kiren Rijiju, G Kishan Reddy, RK Singh, Mansukh Mandaviya, Hardeep Singh Puri and Parshottam Rupala. With this reset, Speaking of women ministers, the Narendra Modi government has nearly doubled the number of women ministers since the first term. The strength has moved from six in the previous term to 11 – the highest number of women ministers in the Union government since 2004.

While UP got seven new ministers (three Dalits and three OBCs and one Brahmin), four new ministers have been inducted from Maharashtra, Karnataka and West Bengal, and three new ministers from Gujarat along with two elevations to Cabinet rank (Parshottam Rupala and Mansukh Bhai Mandaviya). In short, there are 11 women, about 27 OBC Ministers in the council while 12 belong to SC and eight are from Tribal communities. and 11 women. The Council also spans a wide geography, from North-east to the south.
