Bhupendra Patel takes oath as 17th CM of Gujarat

Patel was elected as the legislature party leader of the BJP after Rupani resigned from his position barely 15 months ahead of the assembly elections in Gujarat.

Gandhinagar, September 13: Succeeding Vijay Rupani, Bhupendra Patel took oath as the 17th Chief Minister of Gujarat on Monday.  The oath was administered by Governor Acharya Devvrat at the Raj Bhavan.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah was present during the swearing-in ceremony of Bhupendra Patel. Besides Shah, Chief Ministers of Haryana (Manohar Lal Khattar), Madhya Pradesh (Shivraj Singh Chouhan), and Goa (Pramod Sawant) also attended the ceremony.

 
This comes just day after Bharatiya Janata Party announced Bhupendra Patel's name as the next CM-elect of Gujarat on Sunday. Patel was elected as the legislature party leader of the BJP after Rupani resigned from his position barely 15 months ahead of the assembly elections in Gujarat.
 
Soon after, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, congratulated Bhupendra Patel for taking the oath, saying he will "certainly enrich Gujarat's growth trajectory".
 

"I have known him for years and have seen his exemplary work, be it in the BJP Organisation or civic administration and community service," PM Modi said in a Tweet.

All about the 17th Chief Minister of Gujarat

He holds a diploma in civil engineering. Patel is also known to be soft-spoken and mild-mannered, keeping a distance from the limelight or controversy.

Patel began his political career from Memnagar Nagarpalika in Ahmedabad in the 1990s and served as president of the city civic body in 1999-2000 and 2004-06. Before contesting the corporation election, he also served as AMC school board vice chairman from 2008-10.

Patel is a first-time MLA from Ghatlodia, the Assembly constituency vacated by former chief minister Anandiben Patel after she was appointed Madhya Pradesh Governor.

He is also the first-time MLA from Gujarat's Ghatlodiya who won the 2017 assembly election against the Congress's Shashikant Patel by more than 1 lakh votes.
