Hemant Nagrale, the Mumbai Police Commissioner said that there have been complaints regarding girls and women who don’t live in their homes due to school, college and job requirements, and are facing harassment from phone calls, messages, emails, etc.

He said, “The Nirbhaya Squad is being set up with the aim of creating a sense of respect for women in the society and creating fear of the law, as well as to curb harassment against women.”

The Nirbhaya Squad is to include a woman PSI or ASI rank officer, a woman and a male constable and a driver. A 2-day special training will be given to the squad.

A patrolling pattern will be made and areas will be included by inspecting slum areas, grounds, parks, school / colleges premises, cinemas, malls and markets, subways, bus stands, railways stations, along with places having lesser crowds.
The Police also said that a list of criminals who have sexually assaulted women / children in past 5 years in Mumbai are to be compiled. This list will be procured from Thane and the police will be monitoring their movements.

Workshops of self-defence training for women and girls will be given in schools, colleges and hostels. The names of the accused in all the sexual crimes will be included in the records of Nirbhaya Pathak.

This decision has been taken after a 30-year-old woman was raped in Sakinaka area in Mumbai last week. She sustained some severe injuries. The suspect was undergoing treatment in Rajawadi Hospital in Mumbai. She succumbed to her injuries on Saturday.
