Covid, which has been endemic in India for the past 1.5 years, will become endemic in the next six months, according to a leading expert, who believes that a new variety will not be enough to cause the third wave of infections.
Sujeet Singh, Director of the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), told a popular TV news channel, “This epidemic has exceeded most of our projections, but we will approach endemic status in the next six months.”
Dr. Singh added that this means COVID-19 will be easier to manage and will put less strain on the healthcare system.
Singh emphasised the importance of immunisation in the fight against the virus, saying that people must practise Covid-appropriate behaviour even after being vaccinated.

He also warned that breakthrough infections, in which fully vaccinated persons get infected, will occur in 20 to 30 per cent of cases. “75 crore individuals have been immunised.” If vaccine efficiency is 70%, then approximately 50 crore individuals in India have immunity. A single dose provides immunity of 30-31 per cent. As a result, the 30 crore persons who received a single dose are likewise immunised,” he stated.

He also mentioned that Kerala was recovering from a health crisis that had struck the state a few weeks ago. According to the NCDC director, no new variants, including the C1.2 and Mu strains, have been discovered in India.

“A new variation cannot create a third wave,” he stated. The factor will consist of a combination of behaviour and antibodies. There is a significant concern due to the festival season.” According to Singh, illnesses tend to decrease as a result of vaccination and increased virus exposure.
