India’s Teesta-V Hydropower Station awarded 2021 Blue Planet Prize by International Hydropower Association

The award recognizes hydropower projects which have demonstrated their environmental, social and governance (ESG) performance by undergoing a detailed assessment by independent assessors.

Gangtok, Sept 24: India's Teesta-V hydropower project operated by NHPC Limited has been conferred with the prestigious 2021 IHA Blue Planet Prize for excellence in sustainable hydropower development.
 
It should be noted that the International Hydropower Association (IHA) is a London-based non-profit membership association operating in 120 countries. The prize was awarded by the International Hydropower Association (IHA) on September 23, 2021, the penultimate day of the biennial World Hydropower Congress.

According to a press release, "The award had been conferred to Teesta-V Power Station based on its sustainability assessment undertaken by a team of accredited lead assessors of IHA in 2019 using the Operation Stage tool of the Hydropower Sustainability Assessment Protocol (HSAP) of IHA."

The award recognizes hydropower projects which have demonstrated their environmental, social and governance (ESG) performance by undergoing a detailed assessment by independent assessors. During its assessment, NHPC Limited’s 510 MW Teesta-V project, located on the Teesta River in Sikkim, Northern India, met or exceeded international good practice across all 20 performance criteria using the Hydropower Sustainability Tools.
 
It further added that the IHA Blue Planet Prize is awarded to hydropower projects that also demonstrate excellence in sustainable development. The Hydropower Sustainability Assessment Protocol (HSAP) is the leading international tool for measuring the sustainability of hydropower projects.

"It offers a way to benchmark the performance of a hydropower project against a comprehensive range of environmental, social, technical and governance criteria. Assessments are based on objective evidence and the results are presented in a standardized report," it said.
