Mumbai, September 29: A doctor and a nurse in Thane, have been suspended for mistakenly administering an anti-rabies vaccine / ARV to a man who came to get a Covid-19 vaccination. Additional Commissioner, Thane Municipal Corporation, Sandeep Malvi, said, "A doctor and a nurse suspended for administering an 'anti-rabies dose, instead of COVID vaccine, at a health care centre in Kalwa area of Thane".

The person who had been administered the anti-rabies vaccine to, is stable, said the municipal corporation. Rajkumar Yadav, had gone to enquire about the Covishield vaccine at the Atkoneshwar Nagar primary health care centre, Kalwa East.

The medical officer-in-charge of the centre - Dr. Rakhi Tawade, handed him the case papers for Covishield vaccine, asking him to wait in line.
  
 
Malvi said that Yadav mistakenly sat in a queue meant for ARV. When Yadav's turn came, the nurse, Kirti Rayat, didn’t check his case papers. She neither informed him about the vaccine. The nurse assumed that he was there for the ARV shot and administered the wrong vaccine.

After the jab, he asked her which vaccine was he given. The nurse told him it was an anti-rabies vaccine. Following this, Yadav got agitated and demanded an explanation.

45-year-old Yadav said that he had undergone surgery just recently. Hence, he went to the health centre to ask if he can be vaccinated. Yadav said he was given a shot on both arms, making him suspicious. The nurse did not ask him to show papers or even about what dose he was there for. He was shocked to hear that he was given the anti-rabies vaccine when he was not bitten by a dog.
