Geelani, who spearheaded the separatist movement in Jammu and Kashmir for over three decades, died at the age of 92 from prolonged illness on Wednesday (September 1).

It should be noted that a video of the incident has gone viral on social media. Further, the family members of the separatist also raised anti-national slogans at his residence in Hyderpora in Srinagar in the Union territory of Jammu and Kashmir.

According to the reports, "The FIR was registered at Budgam police station against the family members of Geelani along with other elements for raising anti-national slogans and putting Pakistani flag on the separatist’s body at his home after his death on Wednesday." The FIR No. 277/2021 was lodged at the Budgam police station and the unnamed accused were booked under the anti-terror law Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA).

Besides, the Kashmir Valley remained silent, though a minor stone-petling was reported in Budgam district. IGP (Kashmir range) Vijay Kumar said that several preventive measures including suspension of mobile internet services were taken so that law and order in the area was maintained. However, by Friday, cellular and wired internet services were restored while free movement of civilians was allowed on Saturday.

Following the FIR was registered, Pakistan PM Imran Khan has tried to meddle in India's internal matter saying, "Snatching the body of the 92 year old Syed Ali Geelani, one of the most respected & principled Kashmiri ldrs, & then registering cases against his family is just another shameful example of India’s descent into fascism under the Nazi-inspired RSS-BJP govt".

PDP president Mehbooba Mufti also said, "Having turned Kashmir into an open air prison, now even the dead aren't spared. A family isn't allowed to mourn & bid a final farewell as per their wishes. Booking Geelani sahab's family under UAPA shows GOI's deep rooted paranoia & ruthlessness. This is New India's Naya Kashmir."
