In a thunderbolt incident to the nationalists and the Hindu community, Doordarshan, one of the reputed, notably trusted GOI body has in its 'list of freedom fighters from Tamil Nadu' included the name of Periyar E V Ramasamy, who had waved black flags on August 15- India's Independence Day.

"While nation celebrated independence, #RamsamyNaicker waved Black flags. But his name appears in Doordarshan news as Freedom Fighter!!", tweeted Author and TV panelist Ratan Sharda on Thursday. EV Ramasamy is publically known for his principles of rationalism, self-respect, women’s rights and eradication of caste. He opposed the exploitation and marginalisation of the non-Brahmin Dravidian people of South India and the imposition of what he considered Indo-Aryan India.

He also was one of those persons to organise Anti-Hindu protests in 1938 against introducing Hindi as a compulsory language of study in schools. He claimed that the introduction of Hindi was a dangerous mechanism used by the Aryans to infiltrate Dravidian culture. He believed adoption of Hindi would completely destroy their culture and nullify the progressive ideas of students.

On Hinduism, Periyar believed that it was a religion with no distinctive sacred book (Bhagawad Gita) or origins, but an imaginary faith preaching the superiority of the Brahmins. Periyar openly suggested to those who were marginalised within the Hindu communities to consider converting to other faiths such as Islam, Christianity, or Buddhism. On Islam, he stated how it was good for abolishing the disgrace in human relationship, based on one of his speeches to railway employees at Tiruchirapalli in 1947. Periyar also commended Islam for its belief in one invisible and formless God; for proclaiming equal rights for men and women; and for advocating social unity.

"Muslims are following the ancient philosophies of the Dravidians. The Arabic word for Dravidian religion is Islam. When Brahmanism was imposed in this country, it was Mohammad Nabi who opposed it, by instilling the Dravidian religion's policies as Islam in the minds of the people", he had said at a rally in Tiruchi. Isn't considering such a person as a 'Freedom fighter' highly disgraceful?
