Sainik School Kazhakootam welcomes first batch of girl cadets

Kazhakoottam, Sept 9: In a huge development, Kerala's Kazhakoottam Sainik School welcomed the first batch of girl cadets who have taken admission in the school after clearing the All India Sainik School Entrance Examination (AISSEE 2021) for the academic year 2021-22.

 

It should be noted that this development has happened for the first time in history after the foundation of the only Sainik School in the state was led in 1962.

 

A special assembly was conducted in the school auditorium to welcome the first batch consisting of seven girls from Kerala, two from Bihar and one from Uttar Pradesh, to the Kazhak (Sainik School Kazhakootam) family. The Principal, Colonel Dhirendra Kumar addressed the cadets and conveyed his wishes for their stay in one of its kind of schools in the state.

 

The school's infrastructure has been changing significantly for the last year to welcome the first batch of girls to the campus. The construction of a new house and dormitory was completed by the beginning of the academic year for them.

 

 

Admission of girl cadets in Sainik Schools was successful implemented in the academic year 2018-19 by Sainik School Society, in Mizoram. Subsequently, different states of the country took the initiative of admitting girls in their Sainik schools promoting the spirit within girls to join armed forces and endorsing women empowerment.

 

Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his 75th Independence Day speech announced that all the 33 Sainik Schools will ensure admitting girl cadets from the current academic year onwards. Accordingly, 10 per cent of the total seats of each year's admission will be reserved for girls in every Sainik School in the country.

 

"The government has decided that doors of every Sainik School will now be open for girl children," said the Prime Minister had said while addressing the nation on 75th Independence Day from Red Fort in New Delhi.

 

 

 

1. These schools were introduced by VK Krishna Menon, the Union defence minister from April 1957 to October 1962. Menon conceived this idea in 1961.

 

2. An All India Sainik School Entrance Examination (AISSEE) is conducted for admission to Sainik Schools, which follow the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) curriculum.

 

3. However, it is to be noted that 67% seats are reserved for students who are from the home state of a Sainik School. The remaining 33% students are admitted from outside the home state. As usual, there is reservation also on the basis of Scheduled Castes (15%), Scheduled Tribes (7.5%), Other Backward Classes (27%) and for wards of current and former servicemen (25%).

 

4. Presently, there are 33 such schools in the country. Uttar Pradesh has three Sainik Schools, while Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Haryana, Jammu and Kashmir, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Odisha and Rajasthan have two schools each.

 

5. These schools are run by the Sainik Schools Society under the Union ministry of defence (MoD). As the name suggests, Sainik Schools prepare students for a career in the armed forces. Hence students here are called “cadets” and have to follow strict rules, which are on the lines of those in military academies.
