The high court’s observation came while hearing a petition against the padayatra being held by Congress for the implementation of the Mekedatu project. A division bench comprising Chief Justice Ritu Raj Awasthi and Justice Suraj Govindaraj also pulled up the state government and asked it to inform in two days as to why the march was being allowed.

The Congress' 10-day 'walk for water’ demanding a balancing reservoir across the Cauvery river in Mekedatu in Ramanagara district entered its fourth day today, amid rising COVID cases in the state. Hundreds of party workers and supporters are participating in the 'padayatra' despite several warnings by the BJP-led state government.

On Tuesday, Karnataka Home Minister Araga Jnanendra said the government will take appropriate action at an appropriate time. He also claimed that many who took part in the march have contracted COVID-19 while many did not get themselves tested despite symptoms.

"We will take appropriate action at an appropriate time. It's not that we are letting them go. We are taking action. We are registering cases," Jnanendra said after the virtual meeting chaired by Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai on COVID-19.

Several Congress leaders, including the party’s state chief DK Shivakumar, have also been booked for taking out the march flouting COVID-19 protocols.
