New Delhi, Jan 17: Accepting the demands of the political parties, the Election Commission of India, has postponed the assembly election of Punjab by six days. With that announcement, Punjab assembly elections 2022 will now be conducted on February 20, and the results will be declared on March 10.

The decision was taken at the meeting that was held by the ECI. The revised order from the EC states that the decision has been taken in light of the Guru Ravidas Jayanti celebrations, which will witness the mobility of a large number of devotees to Varanasi on February 16.

The press note issued by EC states, “After consideration of all facts made available, Election Commission has announced 2022 General Elections to the Legislative Assembly of State of Punjab on 8th January 2022 under which notification for the election is to be issued on 21st January 2022 and poll is to take place on 14th February 2022.”

Parties across the political spectrum including Congress, BJP, Punjab Lok Congress, and AAP had sought deferment of polls citing that many voters will be traveling to Varanasi on account of Guru Ravidas Jayanti which falls in February. Around 20 lakh devotees are expected to travel to Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh between February 10-16 to celebrate the day. Political parties feel that they would not be able to cast their votes due to this.
