Late CDS Bipin Rawat’s brother joins BJP, may contest Uttarakhand polls

Dehradun, Jan 20: Late Chief of Defence Staff General Bipin Rawat's brother Colonel Vijay Rawat (Retd), joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday ahead of the upcoming Uttarakhand elections. This came after Vijay Rawat met Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Dhami in Delhi earlier on Wednesday.

His thoughts about the development of the country inspire us to join BJP," Colonel Vijay Rawat (retired), younger brother of late CDS General Bipin Rawat on joining BJP.
 
 
Rawat joined the party in the presence of Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, BJP national general secretary Dushyant Gautam and Uttarakhand BJP president Madan Kaushik. Welcoming Vijay Rawat to BJP, CM Dhami said, "Late Gen Bipin Rawat was the pride of Uttarakhand and always worked to strengthen the Army. Uttarakhand was his birthplace and that is why he wanted to work a lot for the state."
 
Further, he added "I am happy that in order to take his thoughts further, his brother Col Vijay Rawat has joined the BJP… Our party has always respected the soldiers, and will always respect. You entry in the party will definitely strengthen us.”

Colonel Vijay Rawat (Retd):
 
Born in Dehradun in 1962, Rawat served the Army for 34 years. He has been living in Jaipur since retirement, sources said. His son is also in the Army, serving as a Captain in Gorkha Regiment.
 
On the other hand, CDS Gen Bipin Rawat, who hailed from Pauri Garhwal in Uttarakhand, died in a helicopter crash near Coonoor in Tamil Nadu on December 8 last year along with 13 others including his wife Madhulika Rawat.
