Kerala again breaks all records, reports highest-ever single-day COVID surge with over 55,475 cases

New Delhi, Jan 26: COVID-19 cases in Kerala hit a record daily high with over 50,475 lakh new coronavirus infections being reported in the last 24 hours. Seventy people succumbed due to the deadly contagious disease in the last 24 hours.

 

Ernakulam was the worst affected area as the district recorded 9,400 new COVID cases since January 24. Thiruvananthapuram registered 8,606 infections and Thrissur logged 5,520 cases.

 

1,12,281 samples were tested in the last 24 hours, the latest health bulletin stated. Notably, Kerala had recorded 26,514 fresh coronavirus ones on January 24, a day after reporting 45,449 infections on January 23. The southern state logged 45,136 new infections cases the next day. On January 20, 46,387 people were diagnosed with the contagious virus.

 

The daily surge in COVID cases in Kerala has been fuelled by the Omicron variant. At this point, Kerala has 2,85,365 active COVID cases. "Currently, there are 2,85,365 active COVID-19 cases in the state out of which only 3.8 percent are hospitalised," the state health department said in a release.

 

 

 

According to the press release, 4,42,466 people are under observation in Kerala out of which 10,342 are in isolation wards of various hospitals. "Out of those who were found infected today, 139 reached the state from outside while 51,547 contracted the disease from their contacts. The sources of infection of 3,373 patients are yet to be ascertained. 506 health workers are also among the infected," the release said.

 

Addressing the mediapersons, Kerala Health Minister Veena George said that though there has been a steep surge in COVID cases there has been no increase in hospital admissions as compared to the second wave of coronavirus.
