For the first time ever post-independence, India's National Flag will be unfurled atop the Clock Tower at Srinagar's iconic Lal Chowk in Jammu and Kashmir on January 26. Last year, on the occasion of Independence Day, the Clock Tower was illuminated with colors of Indian tricolour. Notably, such developments are taking place after the abrogation of Article 370.

When PM Modi, MM Joshi unfurled tricolor at Srinagar's Lal Chowk in 1992 despite high militancy

Many on social media called upon the government to unfurl the Tricolour in Srinagar in the backdrop of recent developments. They had also asked PM Modi to hoist Tiranga on Independence Day from Srinagar instead of Red Fort. In all of this, the focus came on yet another historical instance of then BJP president Murli Manohar Joshi and then BJP leader Modi unfurling the Tricolour in Lal Chowk despite the increased terrorism activities in 1992.

Notably, Lal Chowk in Srinagar was a very sensitive area in the union territory of Jammu and Kashmir. The whole area was controlled by the radical Islamists but now is accessible for the common man. At the peak of militancy, the BJP had led the momentous 'Ekta Yatra' and hoisted the Indian tricolour at the Lal Chowk. Former BJP president Murli Manohar Joshi had led the movement and PM Modi was the co-ordinator of 15,000 km long Rashtriya Ekta Yatra (national unity march) from Kanyakumari to Srinagar.

The Ekta Yatra commenced on 11th December 1991, coinciding with the birth anniversary of Subramania Bharti and the ‘Balidan Diwas’ of Guru Tegh Bahadur. And, it was scheduled to conclude on 26 January in Srinagar with the hoisting of the tricolour at the Lal Chowk. A rare video clip from that time shows the valor, grit, and determination of PM Modi against all threats to his life.

Needless to say, the success of the Yatra was a milestone for PM Modi, whose organizational skills proved invaluable as the Yatra progressed. An emotional Narendra Modi watched with joy as the tricolour was finally unfurled in Srinagar on 26th January 1992! It was the successful completion of this rare national mission amidst the most challenging circumstances.

Now, too, PM Modi has fought for the people of Jammu and Kashmir by abrogating Article 370.
