India’s Omicron tally nears 2000, Maharashtra alone reports 568 cases

Mumbai, January 4: The total number of individuals infected with the heavily mutated Covid-19 variant Omicron, across states in the country has risen to being 1,892, as of Tuesday. Maharashtra alone has reported as many as 568 cases of Omicron variant, which is followed by Delhi reporting 382 cases.

The worst hit states are Maharashtra and Delhi, which are followed by Kerala with 185 cases, and Rajasthan having reported 174 cases. India reported its first two Omicron cases on December 2.
 
 
Goa recorded 4 more cases of the Omicron variant with reports of samples sent to the lab of National Institute of Virology (NIV), Pune returning on Monday. Goa health minister Vishwajit Rane said, “One patient is from within Goa with no travel history indicating indigenous spread which needs to be further examined.” Hence, Goa’s Omicron tally became 5.

The state also reported a big spike in infections, with 631 fresh cases reported while the caseload crossed the 2,000 mark. The total number of Omicron cases reached 578 in the state. So far, 766 people have recovered from this infection.
