Showing disrespect and putting the question mark over Capt Vikram Bartra's credibility during the Kargil war, Major General Yash Mor (Retd) uttered that Captain Batra got Param Vir Chakra all because of Barkha Dutt and her reporting in the Kargil war.

Vikram Batra

This came to the fore after the video in which Major Yash made this remark went viral on social media. In a video, an "army veteran' can be heard saying, because of Barkha Dutt's interview, Captain Vikram Batra got fame and Param Vir Chakra, otherwise, no one would have known Vikram Batra.

While answering the student named Aditya, he said, "Stories from all sides should be heard. People call Barkha Dutt an anti-Indian. She was the one who interviewed and made Captain Vikram Batra famous during the Kargil war. Otherwise, no one would have known Vikram Batra. He would not have got the credit and Param Vir Chakra if Barkha Dutt would not interview him. He would never have been recommended for Param Vir Chakra. People abuse Barkha Dutt on her timeline, please come out of the WhatsApp university."

Before giving credit to the so called journalist, the Major Mor should have once read about her dubious Kargil coverage that had spooked the army during the Kargil war. The one should be noted that she had not only provided crucial information about the secret operation but also revealed the military locations during the war. Despite knowing that even army officers do not use satellite phones in conflict zones, as it allows enemies to track their movements, she carried one while doing live coverage of the war zone.

While reacting to the controversial video, the netizens, including several army veterans, took objection to the comments made by Mor. Lt Gen Satish Dua (Retd) said, "What nonsense? Gallantry medals are awarded for extreme acts of bravery, in this case also accompanied by supreme self-sacrifice. To cast aspersions on such awards is uncalled for and undignified, even for a citizen, let alone a soldier."

Former Army Chief Ved Malik said, "This is an unbelievable statement from a Maj Gen. Quite foolish to suggest that a soldier was awarded India’s highest bravery award because of a journalist’s reporting. Such loose talk in public does no credit to him and the rank he held in service."

After the backlash, Major General Yash Mor (Retd) tried to play the victim card. He issued a clarification on a video being circulated on social media where he seemingly attributed Capt Vikram Batra’s Param Vir Chakra award to Barkha Dutt’s interview.

This is not the first time. Earlier, Major Mor, in another video, said that Rajput had supported the Mughals.
