Ayurveda in the 21st century needs a fresh wave of new ideas, adventures, and liberation, in order to play its required role in the newly emerging era of medical pluralism. The critical outlook of Ayurveda must be regained to build a progressive future.

Well, we know that after 2014 few Indian-origin methods, and inventions are popular and other countries also started to implement that. International day of yoga is just an example of it, In IDY 2022 nearly 79 countries celebrated it.

It's the right time to bring Ayurveda Mainstream

There are more than 25 thousand PHCs there in India, but it's very tough to find a single Ayurvedic doctor in every PHC. Every year more than 10 thousand BAMS doctors pass out in India.

Ayurveda, the mother of all systems of medicine, growing globally but the speed of growth is not satisfactory.! Even though PHC where the Ayurveda doctors are posted has very few Ayurvedic medicines and treatment facilities. Few states are appointing BAMS doctors in their govt. hospitals on a contract basis, not a permanent one! And their pay scale and facilities are really pathetic.! Half-hearted Government support, Poor status of Government run Ayurvedic Institutions, are a few common and serious problems that Ayurveda faces today. Although the nascent Ayurveda market is witnessing significant growth in the last several years, the industry still combats challenges that need to be overcome.

The COVID-19 pandemic has posed an immense challenge to healthcare systems around the globe in terms of limited healthcare facilities and proven medical therapeutics to address the symptoms of the infection. Millions of people allover the globe switched their daily lifestyle to Yoga and Ayurveda Various types of regimens like Dinacharya, Ritucharya, Aharavidhi, Rasayana Chikitsa, Vyayama, Yoga, and Pranayama These all are very much helpful to enhance the immunity.

While looking at the problems of mainstreaming and medical pluralism, it is essential to analyze the role of Ayurvedic doctors who become part of the modern healthcare system.

Ayush Ministry, a New Hope-

After Modi became PM he setup the AYUSH ministry to promote and give importance to Ayurveda and the traditional medicines of India.

PM Modi's vision for ‘New India’ endeavoring to empower youth, women, and the poor is indeed laudable. The ‘New India’ also needs to be a ‘Healthy India’ where its own traditional systems can play a significant role. Ayurveda, Yoga, Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, Sowa Rigpa, and Homoeopathy collectively covered under the Ministry of AYUSH, represent a pluralistic and integrative scheme of health services. AYUSH can play an important role in realizing the dream of ‘New India’ by providing quality healthcare and medical care for its citizens. At present we are witnessing a highly receptive environment where the value of AYUSH systems in healthcare is widely recognized. Many reforms in administration, research strategies, nature of the practice, and education are already underway at the Ministry of AYUSH.

The National Health Policy 2017 has strongly advocated mainstreaming the potential of AYUSH within a pluralistic system of Integrative healthcare. The NHP 2017 uses a new language of ‘medical pluralism’ and re-emphasizes the need for integrating AYUSH into the National Health Mission, research, and education. Indeed, the NHP 2017 is the most powerful policy expression of integrative healthcare since independence for which the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare must be congratulated.

In April 2022, the government of India introduced the concept of the AYUSH visa, which will make it easier for international travelers to visit the country for medical treatments. The Modi Govt. is planning to push AYUSH medical tourism in the country, with the theme Heal In India, and the AYUSH Visa is an important part of the same. Under this program, traditional medicines and healing practices will be encouraged. Modern medicine and AYUSH practitioners are expected to work together to boost Medical Value Tourism in the country and put India at a prominent place among the premium destinations for medical tourism.

People throughout the globe are eagerly waiting for the help of Ayurveda in solving their health problems. Govt. of India already taking some measures for the development of Ayurveda as an international brand, Still few efforts need to solve common problems faced by Ayurveda and Ayurvedic practitioners.
