Households using clean fuel for cooking

Today, we cannot eat uncooked food. We use several methods and fuels to cook the food. In this article we will see how many percentage of households use clean fuel for cooking.

Food, clothes and shelter are basic human needs. In the pre-historic period or early stage of the human race, man was a hunter and gatherer. The discovery of fire, revolutionaries the cooking. Man developed various cooking techniques to cook food, to get maximum proteins and nutrients. Since the beginning, man used primary sources of fuel for cooking e.g., dry wood, coal, cow dung etc. In the olden time, health issue was not properly addressed or may not be very prominent. Recently, health issues related to using firewood have come forward. These materials while burning create a lot smoke. This smoke is dangerous to health. It contains various toxic gases. Frequent inhalation of such gases causes various breathing-related issues like TB, asthma etc. which in turn affects the immunity of the body. The smoke also badly affects vision.

In NFHS 4 and 5, the number of households having clean fuel for cooking has also ben counted. We can easily see that, the number of households with clean fuel has increased drastically.
 
 
 
In this image we can see that data for most of the districts is not available. The grey shade indicates the maximum percentage of houses with clean fuel for cooking, which is not very much dominant in this map. Instead, the maximum shade that we see is shades of green colour which indicates ranges from 0% to 50% of households with green energy.
 
 
NFHS 5 clean fuel
 
 
In NFHS 5 we can see, that the grey shade indicating more percentage of households having clean fuel has increased. Also, the dark shade of green colour showing the range of 60% to 80% of households having clean fuel dominates southern India. In northern India also, the percentage of households having clean fuel has increased.
 
 
Clean cooking fuel includes various sources. It includes LPG, biogas, electricity, natural gas etc. LPG cylinder, biogas, electricity etc. Keeping in view the bad effects of firewood the Government of India started the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY). Under this programme, the government aimed to provide LPG connections with support of ₹1600 per connection. As per the PIB notification dated 14th March 2022, the target of providing 8 crores of deposit-free LPG connections were achieved in September 2019. In order to provide connections to remaining houses under PMUY, Ujjwala 2.0 was launched on 10th August 2021. Under Ujjwala 2.0 one crore LPG connections will be provided along with first free refill and a free stove.
