In a setback for Congress who was in ruling Punjab for five years, as Congress leader and Punjab CM Charanjit Singh Channi has lost Chamkaur Sahib as well as Bhadaur.
In Bhadaur, the Aam Aadmi Party's Labh Singh Ugoke got over 57,000 votes, while Channi drew a little over 23,000 votes. Similarly, the CM suffered defeat in Bhadaur, a seat that was won by AAP in the previous polls as well. This time, AAP's Labh Singh Ugoke trounced him by more than 33,000 votes.
Apart from him, Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu also has lost the assembly election to AAP’s Jeevan Jyot Kaur by a margin of over 5,000 votes from the Amritsar East constituency.
Earlier, Navjot Singh Sidhu, in a tweet on Thursday, said: "The voice of the people is the voice of God. Humbly accept the mandate of the people of Punjab. Congratulations to Aap !!!"
As per the reports, Channi may soon meet Punjab Governor Banwarilal Purohit and submit his resignation
The Aam Aadmi Party, or AAP, looks set to form government in Punjab with leads showing a good sweep. . As per the latest Election Commission of India trends, AAP has won 13 seats and is leading in 79 seats whereas Congress candidates are ahead in only 18 constituencies. On the other hand, the SAD-BSP alliance and the tie-up led by BJP are leading in 4 and 2 seats respectively.
