I-T dept discovers gifts worth crores given to ‘Matoshree’, Shiv Sena leader says they were for his mother

The officials found diary entries that say a watch worth Rs 50 lakh and another gift of Rs 2 crore were given to "Matoshree" - Matoshree is the name of the Thackeray residence in Bandra, Mumbai.

Mumbai, March 28: The Income Tax department officials investigating the BMC Standing Committee Chairman Yashwant Jadhav, reportedly found a diary with details of suspicious dealings, worth crores. The officials purportedly found diary entries that say a watch worth Rs 50 lakh and another gift of Rs 2 crore were given to 'Matoshree'.

However, Shiv Sena leader Yashwant Jadhav has maintained that 'Matoshree' in the diary entries refers to his mother. When questioned, he said the first diary entry was about watch distribution by him on occasion of his mother’s birthday & the second one was about distribution of gifts to the needy on Gudi Padwa in remembrance of his mother.

The diary was recovered by the I-T department during searches carried out on February 25. Yashwant Jadhav is the chairman of the BMC Standing Committee and his wife, Yamini Jadhav, is the MLA from the Byculla constituency.

The I-T department is also investigating various transactions of one company Newshawk Multimedia Pvt Ltd, which is owned by contractor Bimal Agarwal.

Yashwant Jadhav is suspected to have favoured Bimal Agarwal for various BMC contracts to the tune of Rs 30 crores. Yashwant Jadhav, through Newshawk Multimedia Pvt Ltd, allegedly bought 31 flats in Bilakadi chambers in Byculla. Jadhav allegedly paid cash amounts to 4-5 tenants of the building, with each tenant being paid between Rs 30-35 lakh.

There are 40 other properties which are under investigation are suspected to be linked to Jadhav. Some payments were allegedly made to tenants through hawala channels.

The I-T dept has also sought information from BMC regarding contracts approved by the Standing Committee from April 2018 till the date when Jadhav was the chairman.
