It is a beautiful mystical pool, and what makes it that is that even scientists have not been able to know the actual depth of.

Bhimkund

The mysterious pool is called Bhimkund, and is also known as Neelkund. It is located in the Bajna village, about 70 km from Chattarpur district of Madhya Pradesh. As the name suggests, the story of this Kund belongs to the Mahabharata times. The gist of the legend associated with this Kund is that - during the Mahabharata period, Pandavas were passing through a forest and they were extremely parched. They searched for water but when they could not find any anywhere. Then, one of the Pandava brothers, Bhim, hit the ground with his mace and built the pool, hence quenching his thirst.

The pool is 40-80 mts wide and is shaped exactly like a mace! It is also said that whenever a natural disaster occurs in India, the water in the pool automatically rises. According to reports, local administration, foreign scientists and the Discovery Channel tried to find out the depth of this mysterious pool, but failed to do so.

Also, foreign scientists once sent cameras up to 200 meters underwater to find out the depth of the pool, but they couldn’t get the answer. On the other hand, the water is as holy as the water of river Ganga, never gets deteriorate.

This Bundelkhand region has been facing scarcity of water since back in 2007, but it has this hidden beautiful blue water reservoir. The water in this pool remains so blue and clear that one can see fish swimming underneath! Bhimkund has a unique turquoise water body which is around 5000 years old!

Bhimkund

Legend | According to legend, this mysterious Bhimkund goes way back to the Mahabharata times. During there 13 years of exile, the Pandava brothers and their wife Drapaudi were wandering through the dense forests. While walking, Draupdi started to feel thirsty. In order to quench her thirst, Bheem hit the ground hard with his Gada and water came out from that spot which is now known as BhimKund.

It is still hard to believe that we cannot figure out the actual depth of this pool. No one has been able to touch the bottom of this mystical water body. It is believed that a team of researchers once visited Bheemkund to gauge its depth but failed.

Another mysterious aspect of the kund is that normally, when a person dies underwater, then the body floats above the surface of the water, but Bhimkund has a different phenomenon. Once the body drowned in this kund, it never floats back up; and the body can be never found again.

According to the locals, Bhimkund is also an indicator of upcoming natural disasters. The water level of Bhimkund drastically changes whenever the natural disaster is about to happen. In 2004, at the time of the Tsunami the water level rose about 15 feet and the same happened at the time of the Nepal earthquake.

Hence, the locals believe that the pool of Bhimkund foretells about the upcoming natural calamities. The water of this kund is treated as holy water. Locals also believe that a dip in the Bhimkund on the day of Makar Sankranti will both heal you, and wash away all your sins.
