New Delhi, Apr 11: Despite several attempts to block the no-confidence motion in the country’s National Assembly, the voting took place after midnight in which at least 174 members voted in favor of the motion in the 342-member house while the members of the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) were absent.

Meanwhile, Shehbaz Sharif was nominated by the Opposition as the joint candidate for the election of Prime Minister that is scheduled to hold today at 2 PM local time. Following his nomination by the opposition, Sharif tweeted, "Special thanks to media, civil society, lawyers, my Quaid Nawaz Sharif, Asif Zardari, Maulana Fazal-ur-Rehman, Bilawal Bhutto, Khalid Maqbool, Khalid Magsi, Mosin Dawar, Ali Wazir, Amir Haider Hoti & leaders & workers of all political parties for standing up for the Constitution!"

Sharif, who is the joint Opposition candidate, submitted his nomination papers at the National Assembly Secretariat to contest the re-election for the slot of the prime minister. On other hand, PTI’s Shah Mahmood Qureshi, former foreign minister, also submitted his papers for the same post. The National Assembly Secretariat announced that the nomination papers of both candidates were scrutinised, after which they were accepted. However, according to the reports, it is more likely for Shehbaz Sharif to become the next Pakistan PM.

Shehbaz is the younger brother of three-time Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif who was removed from the chair in 2017 and was jailed over corruption charges. After being released on bail for medical treatment, he is currently based in the United Kingdom. He has held the chief minister’s chair in Punjab province. During his time as a chief minister of Punjab which is considered to be Pakistan’s most populous province, Shahbaz planned and implied a number of infrastructure major projects, including Pakistan’s first modern mass transport in Lahore.

Sharif on Sunday met former president Asif Ali Zardari and PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari to discuss the current political situation in the country, on the eve of a crucial session of Parliament which will elect the new premier. The meeting between the three top Opposition leaders took place at the Bilawal House here, hours after they ousted Imran Khan as the prime minister after the cricketer-turned-politician lost the no-confidence vote in the National Assembly.
