Gandhinagar, April 21: Gujarat Congress leader and Vadgam MLA Jignesh Mevani was arrested by the Assam Police over objectional tweets. He was arrested by the police from Palanpur Circuit House at around 11:30 pm on Wednesday and was later taken to Ahmedabad. He will be taken to Assam on Thursday.
Mevani has been arrested in connection with some of his derogatory tweets. His Twitter account shows that some of the recent tweets put out by him have been withheld due to a request by authorities.
The Assam Police registered a case against Jignesh Mevani under non-bailable sections like conspiracy to create enmity between two communities, insulting the community, disturbing the atmosphere of peace based on a tweet shared a few days ago.
Mevani is booked under sections 120B (criminal conspiracy), section 153(A) (promoting enmity between two communities), 295(A), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace), and sections of the IT Act. The complaint has been filed against Mevani for a tweet dated 18 April where he had written that PM Modi worships Godse as his God.
On other hand, the Congress leaders' supporters will protest against his arrest at the national capital today, April 21, with slogans of 'save the constitution, save the country'.
